The Sandcastle

Revere, MA; completed 2024 | Across the boulevard from Revere Beach, the project was envisioned by the client to add two stories with eight units to an existing three story, full masonry structure with eight existing units including two in the basement. The addition modernizes the building with the addition of an elevator while expanding the footprint to create a distinct yet similar identity to the existing below. The overall design recognizes and amplifies its context. The existing building’s glass stair tower is extended to keep residents’ constant connection with the beach even in circulation. The addition utilizes a natural stained Acre siding to reflect the visual identity of the site with its sand and driftwood, while using the Acre’s natural water resiliency to extend the lifespan of the building. The interior continues the visual connection to site, drawing in the warmth and softness of the beach in a clean, modern, refined palette of woods that invite the exterior site and exterior materials in for a holistic design that harmonizes architecture with site.
